Playground Turf Is a Complete Surfacing System

A playground surface is more than artificial grass

A playground turf installation must be treated as a complete surfacing system. The visible turf is only the top layer. Beneath it may be infill, a shock-absorbing pad, a prepared base or existing hard surface, drainage components and carefully finished transitions. Each layer affects how the surface feels, drains, wears and responds to impact. US Family Turf evaluates the complete assembly so schools, childcare operators, parks and commercial property owners can make an informed decision.

Critical fall height guides the system

Where playground equipment is present, we begin by identifying the equipment and the applicable fall height or use-zone information. The CPSC explains that testing under ASTM F1292 provides a critical-height rating for a surface. That rating is associated with a tested system at a stated thickness; it is not a blanket property of all synthetic turf. Pad selection must therefore be matched to the equipment, site and documented system performance. If formal compliance or certification is required, the product data, installation detail and testing pathway should be confirmed before construction.

        Understanding G-max and HIC

Impact performance is often described using G-max and Head Injury Criterion, or HIC. In simple terms, G-max reflects peak deceleration during an impact, while HIC considers both the magnitude and duration of the deceleration curve. Lower numbers generally indicate greater impact attenuation, but no single number tells the entire story. The relevant standard, test method, system construction, field condition and required threshold all matter. We explain these concepts in plain language and help clients compare complete systems rather than relying on vague claims that a surface is simply ‘soft’ or ‘safe.’

        Brock and Schmitz padding options

Brock produces interlocking expanded-polypropylene pad systems designed to contribute impact attenuation, dimensional stability and drainage beneath turf. Schmitz Foam Products manufactures ProPlay shock and drainage pads made from cross-linked polyethylene foam, with products developed for sports fields and playground fall protection. These are examples of engineered underlayments that can be considered when their tested system data matches the project. The correct manufacturer, product and thickness are chosen from the project requirements; US Family Turf does not assume one pad fits every playground.

        Accessibility and firm, stable routes

Playground accessibility is not achieved by appearance alone. The U.S. Access Board explains that accessible routes within play areas must meet technical requirements and references ASTM F1951 for accessibility of surface systems. Where accessible routes overlap equipment use zones, impact attenuation requirements may also apply. Base stability, seams, openings, transitions, slopes and ongoing maintenance all influence accessibility. Our planning process considers these conditions and coordinates with the owner’s design team or accessibility professional when the scope requires it.

        Drainage and cleanability

Playgrounds experience spills, dust, leaves and concentrated foot traffic. A permeable surface can only drain as well as the layers below it. We assess the subgrade or hard surface, elevations, outlets and surrounding hardscape before recommending a drainage approach. Turf systems can eliminate mud and displaced loose-fill material, but they still require cleaning. Routine debris removal, rinsing when appropriate, brushing, infill management and inspection of seams and edges help keep the area functional.

        Installation process

After confirming the scope, we protect the surrounding site, remove unsuitable materials as required and establish the specified elevations. Outdoor aggregate bases are placed, graded and compacted; hard surfaces are cleaned and repaired as the approved scope requires. Padding is installed according to the selected system detail, followed by the turf, seams, perimeter attachment, infill and finish grooming. Transitions are checked carefully because playground edges and access routes must remain smooth and durable.
