Campus applications

The surface below matters

Every school site begins with an assessment of what is already there. Outdoor installations may require removal of soil or failed landscaping, grading, a compacted aggregate base and a drainage plan. Existing concrete or asphalt can sometimes provide a stable platform, but cracks, low areas, edges and water movement must be reviewed before turf is installed. Indoor or hard-surface applications may use a bonded installation, with optional padding selected according to the intended activity. There is no universal detail that works for every campus.

Safety and accessibility are system questions

For a simple courtyard, the priority may be durability, cleanability and trip-resistant transitions. For a playground within an equipment use zone, the project may require an impact-attenuating surface selected for the equipment’s fall height. Public play areas may also need accessible routes and surface performance consistent with applicable accessibility requirements. ASTM F1292 addresses impact attenuation for playground surfacing, while ASTM F1951 is referenced for accessibility of surface systems around playground equipment. Compliance is tied to the complete installed system and, where required, appropriate documentation or testing—not the turf carpet by itself.

Padding selected for the actual use

Padding can improve comfort and impact attenuation, but more padding is not automatically better. The appropriate product and thickness depend on the use, substrate, required fall-height or performance target, turf and infill combination, drainage strategy and manufacturer test data. Drainage, heat and maintenance

A school surface should be designed for the realities of Southern California. We evaluate where water enters and exits the site, how the base drains and whether existing hardscape creates trapped low points. We also discuss heat honestly: synthetic turf can become warmer in direct sun, so shade, scheduling, hydration policies, material selection and cooling strategies may be relevant. Routine maintenance still matters. Debris removal, brushing, infill redistribution, seam and edge inspections and periodic deeper service help preserve appearance and consistent performance.
